Barstow, CA is a gateway to wonders of the Mojave Desert.  Take a short journey in almost any direction and you can discover some amazing wonders of nature.  Journey to the northwest and you will be awestruck by the grandeur of the high Sierra Mountains.  Driving a short distance to the southwest leads to the Los Angeles Basin, full of opportunity and adventure.  The San Bernardino Mountains lie to the south, offering the beauty of Big Bear Lake and the snow capped forests. Northeast of Barstow, you encounter Baker, which leads to the spectacular beauty found in the harshness of Death Valley.  So many amazing adventures await for those willing to make the journey.

This past weekend, some friends joined my wife and me.  We decided to take a short trip out to the Mojave National Preserve.  We headed east on I-40 to Kelbaker Road, about 75 miles from Barstow.  We made our first stop at the Kelso Dunes.  After the drive, the Dunes provided a great chance to stretch the legs with a short hike and climb around these huge piles of sand.  If you come, bring the kids.  They will love the giant sand box.  There was just enough breeze to hear the Dunes begin to sing.

Just a short distance down the road is the renovated Kelso Depot.  Of course, trains no longer stop here, but the Preserve utilizes the building as a small museum.  The displays are fabulous and provide great insight into the nature and history of valley.  The Depot also offers some outside tables where our company of friends enjoyed a picnic lunch while admiring the mighty Providence Mountains.

Once our appetites (and curiosities) were satisfied, we continued our journey toward Baker.  In route, we attempted to locate the lava tube described in some of the materials we collected at the Depot.  We didn't plan very carefully (or track our mileage, which would have made the attempt more successful) and, therefore, didn't take the right road out toward the volcano cones.  After driving around in the desert for a while (4-wheel drive is a must!), we headed back to the highway.  We reached the road, but only after coming upon a fantastic cliff cut into a wash.  Using your imagination you could hear the water rushing over these falls.

All said, our adventure for the weekend was quite enjoyable.  Barstow's location makes these kind of weekend discovery trips a great benefit to our small town life.  Come to Barstow and be ready for an adventure!
